Former teacher who sexually assaulted student gets 6 years to life

Adam Burke, 40, pleaded guilty in October to one count of sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust.

Burke was arrested in Lakewood on Jan. 29 after an investigation that started with a "Safe-2-Tell" tip to police stating a 16-year-old student was possibly in an inappropriate relationship with Burke, the student's former teacher.

According to the arrest affidavit, Burke taught at Caprock from November 2018 to June 2022, mainly teaching math and science.

Burke and the victim began exchanging text messages in October 2021, according to the affidavit.

The messages indicate Burke and the victim had sex on at least two occasions.

According to the affidavit, the messages, which included explicit messages, continued into December 2022.

The victim's journal entries were reviewed also, according to the affidavit, and contained references to their relationship and having sex with Burke. The entries also mention Burke being afraid of getting caught and saying he is "not a pedo."

Burke left Caprock for a job with Kipp Colorado Schools at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. His employment with Kipp Colorado Schools, which is a public charter school based in Denver, was terminated, according to the district.

Three other charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The Department of Corrections sentence will be followed by 10 years to life of mandatory parole, and Burke must register as a sex offender, although he was not found to be a sexually violent predator.
